Southwest Art - Cactus Blooms

"Blossom" - Open Edition

This is the bloom of the hedgehog cactus.  This little giant has powerful and bright blooms to attract all the right insects and birds for it's survival.  It attracted me too!  One of the joys of painting the desert landscape is that I get to be out with all the 'stuff', the blossoms and blooms and the insects and birds.  It's my job to pay attention when the landscape turns 'pretty'. So often I hear from visitors to the art festivals that 'the desert didn't bloom this year'...and I saw it bloom, I was there. It might have been just a day or two, just before the first 100 degree temperatures hit us, but it bloomed.  Of course, some years are better for the glamour than others.  The more rain we have in the fall and the spring, the better the flora.
